Introduction

Aspect Ratio is the proportion between the width and height of a TV screen

  • Most HD content is shot in 16:9 aspect ratio; a wider, more rectangular picture than older 4:3 broadcasts

  • Some broadcasters duplicate (and down-convert) the same 16:9 feed on their HD channel for their SD channels

    • If you have a 16:9 television:

      • Newer 16:9 broadcasts will be the same shape as the TV screen; you shouldn't see a difference

      • Older 4:3 broadcasts will have left and right borders to keep its 'square' 4:3 shape

    • If you have a 4:3 television:

      • The SD channel now has black bars permanently placed above and below the programming so you can see its entire width

      • However, for older 4:3 programming, the bars above and below combine with left and right bars, window-boxing the 4:3 program

    • This format is controlled by the broadcaster, not your cable company. Our company distributes the signal given to us

    • You may be able to change the aspect ratio of your HD converter to make the picture the way you want it

    • Additionally, if you have an HDTV, you may have settings on it (consult your TV manual or contact your manufacturer)

      •  Older 4:3 (non HD) TVs do not have these settings

Resolution defines the amount of pixels displayed on the screen

  • 4K (Available on some TiVos)

  • 1080p  (Available on TiVo)

  • 1080i

  • 720p

  • 480i (Standard Definition)

  • i or p refers to the scanning technology

    • i = Interlaced scanning technology. It scans and refreshes even and odd lines separately, but produces very sharp pictures in general when the image is still or has little motion

    • p = Progressive scanning technology (newer). Scans and refreshes all lines at the same time. Progressive scanning produces smoother motion with less blurring. It's perfect for high action movies and sports.
