| 1. Introduction |
Your
Checkmate V (Model RT-U50) universal remote control is simple to program, easy to use, and
can operate up to five (5) electronic devices which include:
- CABLE - Cable converters
- TV - Televisions
- VCR - VCRs
- DVD- DVD Players
- AUX - 2nd CABLE, 2nd TV, 2nd VCR
Some of the special features on
the Checkmate V (Model RT-U50) universal remote control are:
Point and Press Programming
Lets you program your TV, VIDEO, DVD, and AUDIO devices without using codes, For more
information, see Helpful Tips and Troubleshooting.
SmartKeys
Program Multiple button presses on the [CABLE], [TV],and [PPV/LOCK] buttons. For more
information, see Your Remote's Smartkeys
Mode Lock
Your Model RT-U50 remote comes "locked" in it's CABLE operating mode. To operate
more functions on your TV, VCR, DVD, or AUDIO devices, see
[DEVICE] Button
[DEVICE] button operates only when Mode Lock feature is unlocked. When [DEVICE] is
pressed,one of the power buttons will light up indicating the currrent device that is
being operated. While the current mode power button is illuminated, press a
non-illuminated power button to operate a different device.
[VCR/DVD/VOD] Button
"Toggels" the VCR buttons between "Video On Demand" (VOD), VCR, or DVD
functions.
Memory Gaurd
Permanent programming memory eliminates reprogramming after battery changes.
Time Out
Shuts remote off if any button is pressed for over 45 seconds. This extends battery life
in the event the remote becomes lodged under or between heavy objects.
Reset
Lets you reset your remote to it's original default settings. For more information, see section 17, General Reset |

| 2.
Installing / Replacing Batteries |
| Install
two (2) "AAA" batteries as indicated by the diagram in the battery compartment.
Be careful to properly match the "+ / -" ends of the batteries with the diagram
in the battery compartment. Under normal use, your
remote should operate for approximately 10 - 12 months on 2 "AAA" non-alkaline
batteries. For longer life, use alkaline-type batteries.
When the batteries become too weak to operate the remote
control properly, the mode keys will become dim or not illuminate at all during use. When
this happens, install 2 new "AAA" size batteries.
Your remote control has Memory Guard,
which eliminates reprogramming after battery changes. |

| 3. Programming
Your Cable Converter |
| Your remote is pre-programmed to operate Motorola's DCT® 5100 Series,
2000 Series, and CFT2200® set-top CABLE converters. If you have one of these
devices, you do not need to program your cable box. If you have one of these
devices, and your remote is not responding, please view the General
Reset Instructions. If you need to
operate a different CABLE converter, look up the brand and model number in the attached
code list. If you are not sure of your brand and model, contact your cable company.
To program (setup) the remote to operate your CABLE
converter...
- Turn on your CABLE converter.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence:
- Press [CABLE]. The [CABLE] button will illuminate.
- From the Cable Setup Code list below, locate and enter the
3-digit code for your brand and model.
- Press [CABLE] to lock in the code. The [CABLE] button will
blink 2 times and go out.
Write your CABLE brand & setup code
down for future reference.

| 4. Programming Your TV |
| If you
have a TV operated by remote control, it is recommended that you plug it directly into a
wall outlet instead of the cable converter. To
program (setup) the remote to operate your TV...
- Turn on your TV.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [TV]. The [TV] button will illuminate.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your TV turns off. As soon as your TV turns off, release
[CH ].
OR
b. From the TV Setup Code list below, locate and enter the
3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are listed, you may have to enter several
3-digit codes until your TV turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your TV turns back on, press [TV] to lock
in the code. The [TV] button will blink 2 times and go out.
If your TV does not turn back on, repeat steps 4 and 5
above until you can turn your TV off and on.**
Write your TV brand & setup code for
future reference.
** NOTE when using the Point and Press
Programming method (step 4a.). If you find a code that turns your TV off but not back on
(step 5.), you may have gone past the correct matching code. Try pressing [CH ] one step at a time until you
find a code that turns your TV back on. Refer to the section entitled Code Number
Readback.

| 5. Programming Your VCR |
To
program (setup) the remote to operate your VCR...
- Turn on your VCR.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [VCR]. The [VCR] button will illuminate.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your VCR turns off. As soon as your VCR turns off, release
[CH ].
OR
b. From the VCR Setup Code list below, locate and enter the
3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are listed, you may have to enter several
3-digit codes until your VCR turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your VCR turns back on, press [VCR] to lock
in the code. The [VCR] button will blink 2 times and go out.
If your VCR does not turn back on, repeat steps 4 and 5
above until you can turn your VCR off and on.**
Write your VCR brand & setup code for
future reference.
** NOTE when using the Point and Press
Programming method (step 4a.). If you find a code that turns your VCR off but not back on
(step 5.), you may have gone past the correct matching code. Try pressing [CH ] one step at a time until you

Your Audio Device |
To
program (setup) the remote to operate your AUDIO device (CD Player, Receiver,
etc.)
- Turn on your AUDIO or AUXILIARY device (2nd CABLE, 2nd TV,
2nd VCR).
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [AUDIO]. The [AUDIO] button will illuminate.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your
Audio Device turns off. As soon as your Audio Device turns off, release [CH ].
OR
b. From the Audio
Setup Code lists, locate and enter the 3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are
listed, you may have to enter several 3-digit codes until your Audio Device turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your Audio Device turns back on, press
[AUDIO] to lock in the code. The two illuminated buttons will blink 2 times and go out.
- If your Audio Device does not turn back on, repeat steps 4
and 5 above until you can turn your device off and on.**

AUDIO Button to work a 2nd TV |
| Instead
of programming an audio device, you can program your remote to operate a 2nd TV, 2nd TV,
or 2nd DVD player. To program a 2nd TV to you remote's [AUDIO] button:
- Turn on your 2nd TV.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [AUDIO] and then [TV}. The [AUDIO] & [TV] buttons
will start to blink.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your 2nd
TV turns off. As soon as your 2nd TV turns off, release [CH ].

Receiver |

of programming an audio device, you can program your remote to operate a Satelite
Receiver. To program a Satelite Receiver to you remote's
[AUDIO] button:
- Turn on your Satelite Receiver.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [AUDIO] and then [VCR}. The [AUDIO] & [VCR]
buttons will start to blink.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your
Satelite Receiver turns off. As soon as your Satelite Receiver turns off, release [CH ].
OR
b. From the VCR
Setup Code lists, locate and enter the 3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are
listed, you may have to enter several 3-digit codes until your Satelite Receiver turns
off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your Satelite Receiver turns back on, press

Your AUDIO Button to work a Laserdisc
Player |
| Instead
of programming an audio device, you can program your remote to operate a Laserdisc Player. To program a
Laserdisc Player to you remote's [AUDIO] button:
- Turn on your Laserdisc Player.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence
- Press [AUDIO] and then [VCR}. The [AUDIO] & [VCR]
buttons will start to blink.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your
Laserdisc Player turns off. As soon as your Laserdisc Player turns off, release [CH ].
OR
b. From the VCR
Setup Code lists, locate and enter the 3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are
listed, you may have to enter several 3-digit codes until your Laserdisc Player turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your Laserdisc Player turns back on, press
[AUDIO] to lock in the code. The two illuminated buttons will blink 2 times and go out.
- If your Laserdisc Player does not turn back on, repeat steps
4 and 5 above until you can turn your device off and on.**

Your AUDIO Button to work a DCR/DMX |
| Instead
of programming an audio device, you can program your remote to operate a DCR/DMX. To program a DCR/DMX
to you remote's [AUDIO] button:
- Turn on your DCR/DMX.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence.
- Press [AUDIO] and then [VCR}. The [AUDIO] & [VCR]
buttons will start to blink.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your
DCR/DMX turns off. As soon as your DCR/DMX turns off, release [CH ].
OR
b. From the Setup Code list below, locate and enter the 3-digit code for your brand. If
multiple codes are listed, you may have to enter several 3-digit codes until your DCR/DMX
turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your DCR/DMX turns back on, press [AUDIO]
to lock in the code. The two illuminated buttons will blink 2 times and go out.
- If your DCR/DMX does not turn back on, repeat steps 4 and 5
above until you can turn your device off and on.**
Write your DCR/DMX brand & setup code
for future reference.
** NOTE
when using the Point and Press Programming method (step 4a.). If you find a code
that turns your device off but not back on (step 5.), you may have gone past the correct
matching code. Try pressing [CH ] one
step at a time until you find a code that turns your DCR/DMX device back on. Refer to the
section entitled Code Number Readback.

Player |
To
program (setup) the remote to operate your DVD Player...
- Turn on your DVD Player.
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both
buttons down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence.
- Press [DVD]. The [DVD] button will illuminate.
- Either...
a. Press and hold [CH ] until your DVD
Player turns off. As soon as your DVD Player turns off, release [CH ].OR
b. From the DVD Player Setup Code list below, locate and
enter the 3-digit code for your brand. If multiple codes are listed, you may have to enter
several 3-digit codes until your DVD Player turns off.
- Press [MUTE]. If your DVD Player turns back on, press [DVD]
to lock in the code. The [DVD] button will blink 2 times and go out.
- If your DVD Player does not turn back on, repeat steps 4 and
5 above until you can turn your VCR off and on.**
Write your DVD Player brand & setup

TV / VCR Combination Units |
- First, program your remote as you would a TV.
Following the steps in this section, find a TV Setup Code that operates the TV functions
of your TV / VCR (power, vol / , mute, ch / , 0
9).
- Then, program your remote your remote as you would a
VCR.
- Note: You can not use the Point
and Press Programming method to program the VCR functions of the TV / VCR. Use
the CODE Entry Option (b) ONLY.
- Individually enter, lock and test each 3-digit VCR setup
code until a code is found that operates the VCR functions of the TV / VCR unit
- To verify you have entered the correct VCR
code insert a video tape into the TV / VCR unit and test the different functions of
the VCR

Remote's SmartKeys |
| Your
remote is equipped with three (3) SmartKeys - [CABLE], [TV], and [PPV / LOCK]. Each
SmartKey can be programmed to transmit up to 12 functions (button presses), which
can help simplify your remotes operation and reduce button presses. IMPORTANT:
You must first program ALL devices on your RT-U50 for SmartKeys to work correctly.
- Programming and using the [CABLE] SmartKey
The [CABLE] button normally turns on / off your CABLE converter. But you can make it do
more than that!
- Press [DEVICE], then [CABLE] to select the CABLE mode of
your remote.
- Press [CABLE], then [OK-SEL] together hold both down
together until the [CABLE] button illuminates.
- Press the option Number below for the desired functions:

Pay_per_view Events. You can program this SmartKey to tune to a specific cable
channel (ex. 123) with just one button press!
- Press [DEVICE], then [CABLE] to select the CABLE mode of
your remote.
- Press [PPV / LOCK], then [OK-SEL] together hold both
down together until the [CABLE] button illuminates.
- In this order, press [1] , [2], [3].
The [CABLE] button will and remain lit
- Press [CH
] to store the setting. The [CABLE] button will blink and go out.
To return the [PPV / LOCK] button to its normal function,
repeat steps 1 and 2 above, then press [CH ].
Remember: When using any
SmartKey to transmit a series of functions, be sure to keep your remote aimed at the
devices to ensure all functions are received in their entirety. |

| 19. Code Number Readback |
To
identify the 3-digit setup code for your devices, follow these steps:
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] - hold both down until the
illuminated mode buttons start blinking in sequence.
- Press [CABLE] to identify your CABLE converter code. Or
[TV], [VCR], [AUX], [DVD] to identify these codes. The selected mode button will
illuminate.
- Press [INFO]. The illuminated button will blink
back the code number, with a 1-second interval between each digit of the code.
Example: For code 105, the remote will blink 1 time, then 10 times, then 5
times.

| 20. Helpful
Tips & Troubleshooting |
Point
and Press Programming
- Your remote has a Point and Press Programming label on
the back of its case. This will help you quickly program the remote without using codes.
- A mode button will illuminate while the remote is in a
programming mode. In the absence of an entry, the illuminated button will go out after 40
seconds.
- When locking in your devices, the illuminated mode button
will blink 2 times and go off.
- When using the Point and Press Programming method, you
may find a code that turns your device off but not back on (after pressing [MUTE]). If
this happens
- The correct code has not been found. Continue pressing [CH
] until your devices turn on and off.
- OR.. You may have gone past the correct matching code. Try
pressing [CH
] one step at a time
until you find a code that turns your devices back on
- If you have a Scientific Atlanta 8500 series
converter, press [CH
] or [CH
] to turn on the converter. Press
[CABLE] to turn these converters off.
- Your remote control will automatically shut itself off if
the same key is pressed and held for 45 seconds. This extends battery life in the event
the remote becomes lodged under or between large, heavy objects.
- To reset your remote to its original settings
- Press [DEVICE], then [MUTE] together - hold both buttons
down until the lighted mode buttons start blinking in sequence.
- Press [CABLE]. The [CABLE] button illuminates.
- Press [*Help], then [*HELP]. The [CABLE] button will blink 3
times and go out.
- When programming your TV, VCR, or AUXILIARY devices, you may
find several setup codes that can turn on / off a specific device. However, not all of
these codes may operate all the functions on the device bring programmed. Be sure to use
the setup code that operates all the functions on the device you are programming.
- If you have any questions concerning the operation of your
CABLE converter, contact your cable operator.
Batteries Weak?
When the batteries become too weak, the remote will reset
itself back to operate only the CABLE portion. This is a default setting.
When you press [DEVICE] and [TV], the [TV] button should be
illuninating when you press the
[CH ] or [CH ] buttons. If this is not happenning, and the
[CABLE] button is illuninating when you press the [CH ] or [CH ]
buttons, you probably need new batteries
To recitify, install 2 new "AAA" size batteries.

| 21. General Reset |
| All memory on the remote is cleared, except for the default
settings of the DCT® 5100 series, 2000 Series, and CFT2200® converter boxes.Press [OK-SEL], then [LAST] together
until all the device buttons [DVD}, [AUDIO], [VCR], [TV] start blinking in sequence, for
about 5 seconds.
All codes will now be CLEARED, except for
the default settings of the DCT® 5100 Series, 2000 Series, and CFT2200® converter boxes.
Start programming your RT-U50 over again, as
needed.
